DDS-NET. Dedicated to stopping the demon invasion.

What is DDS-NET?

DDS-NET is a reference to Shin Megami Tensei 1 on Super Famicom and PS1. Some of you might be familiar with the Shin Megami Tensei game series, or it's spin-off series: Persona. But anyway, In Shin Megami Tensei 1, (Mild spoilers by the way, if you haven't played or don't want spoilers look away!), the main character can access an online chat network on his PC called DDS-NET. On there, he meets a user named STEVEN who distributes a demon summoning program he made to talk, capture, and register the demons that are taking over. However, not many people can withstand this program too well. Yet the player and their friends seem to be able to use it just fine. So, what's up with me? Why am I mentioning it here? That's because I've been playing around with making an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server to make this DDS-NET thing real. Below is a screenshot of the network in-game:

What is IRC?

IRC is an old chat protocol that was actually developed in the late 80's. The way it works is, you download an IRC client on your device, and you connect to a server by connecting to it's address. I'm sure many of you are familiar with a program called Discord correct? While Discord isn't the same as IRC, it's heavily based on IRC. In Discord, you would join a server and send messages in channels or in DMs (Direct Messages) correct? That's exactly how IRC works, but it's a tad different that's all. Here's some more information about IRC if you'd like here. Below is an old IRC client called xchat connecting to my DDS-NET IRC server:

Why am I making all this?

Because yes. And believe it or not, there are actually still people who use IRC. Should you use IRC too? Yes! Absolutely! But I wanna warn you though, people can very easily see your IP address if you don't use a cloak. Now that doesn't mean it's dangerous, because you can actually request to get a cloak from most modern IRC servers, but you should be very careful and research how IRC works before you try it, or try running your own IRC server on a local network to be safe while having fun with it.

How do I get a cloak?

The simplest way is to use something like NickServ which Libera.Chat offers on their server, or you can use a cloud IRC platform such as IRCcloud or an IRC bouncer. Using a cloud IRC our IRC bouncer program is recommended because even with a registered Nickname with NickServe people can still directly connect to you to determine your IP.

That sounds scary!

Too scary? That's ok! Ask more questions about IRC on NetNerdz! De-mystifing something can make it a lot less scary. And all you have to do is ask by clicking the icon below.
